2 Schools Finished

By KBJR News 1

Construction on two schools as part of the controversial long range facilities plan in Duluth is complete.

Improvements on Stowe and Lakewood Elementary Schools began in May... and were just finishing up today.

"Staff are here they've been preparing their classrooms. Students are going to be showing up at school tomorrow and I know are ready from the response of the staff that they really like what they're seeing," said Kerry Leider, Property and Risk Manager for Duluth Public Schools.

Both schools got new playgrounds and Mariah Goodreau certainly likes Stowe Elementary's.

"I love it I just love how it has a big slide instead of those small slides that weren't easy to go down," Goodreau said.

In both schools, new energy efficient lighting was installed.

Also upgrades to the heating and cooling systems will help save the schools money on energy.

And many teachers and students are excited about a new interactive technology called Smart Boards.

Design plans are underway for six schools.

Construction is scheduled to begin next summer.

Ordean High School is one of those six.

Work on Denfeld High School will start around Spring 2010.
