Possible SMDC Strike

By KBJR News 1

A vote has given 3-hundred technical workers from Saint Mary's Duluth Clinic Health system permission to strike.

United Steelworks local 9460 represents these employees, and agreed earlier this week to allow the USW negotiating committee to authorize a possible strike.

The workers' contracts expired June 30th.

They've been trying to negotiate a new contract since April, but haven't yet reached an agreement.

"We are somewhat disappointed in this development because we feel that we are making some real progress at the bargaining session and we are still very actively negotiating this contract," said Kim Kaiser, Public Relations Specialist for SMDC.

The last negotiating meeting is September 18th.

If the workers do decide to initiate a strike, by law, they must give a ten day notice before the strike can begin.
