St. Louis County Commission Meeting

By KBJR News 1

Money was the big topic at today's St. Louis County Board meeting in Duluth.

The 2009 budget and levy proposal were on the agenda.

The board unanimously approved a proposal to increase the county's property tax levy by almost five percent. But the budget must still be pared to make ends meet.

County officials said staff will have to be reduced. But they prefer to do that through attrition rather than layoffs.

Property, home, and business taxes will cover almost a third of the budget.

The rest is made up through money from the state and other government entities and through services provided.

The board will hold public meetings in December to get input on the budget plan.

Also at today's meeting commission chair, Mike Forsman proclaimed this National Preparedness Month to make people aware of the importance of personal emergency planning
