Fall Colors In The Northland

By KBJR News 1

The fall season is here and leaves are changing across the northland.

While the color is still brighter inland the shores are not far behind.

This week in Nature Matters David Hoole looks at the economic benefits and biology behind fall's vibrant nature.

You can see some reddening on the tips here.

Guy Merole is excited for the fall colors to appear. He's an Americor naturalist working at Hartley Nature Center and has a prediction of the upcoming fall color season.

My opinion is that's it is going to be a fairly striking fall. So far we've had a productive summer, there has been plenty of water, there's been a lot of growth on the trees, we've had lots of moisture in the fall here as well. Starting now if we get some more bright sunny days like we've been having in the past few days and more, cool, crisp, nights that'll promote greater coloration this fall.

Guy explains the fall's wide color spectrum is present in the leaves all summer but it is overpowered by the green of the chlorophyll.

During the summer while the tree is productive there is all those pigments in the leaves on the trees.

Chlorophyll is the main one, all those pigments in the leaves in the trees chlorophyll is the major one that you'll see because that's the most important in the photosynthesis.

A change begins in the trees as the days get shorter and the leaves take on a much more vibrant nature.

The trees close off their connection to the leaves.

The chlorophyll disappears as its getting cut off from the nutrients form the tree and the other pigments that are in the leaf start to show more abundantly.

Fall colors is another reason for people to come and visit Duluth.

Gene Shaw is excited for fall as well.

As the tourism guru working for Visit Duluth he enjoys greeting visitors that the beautiful colors the season brings.

It's a pleasant boost for us in the fall. Families, they're going back to school and stuff like this and it gives another reason to come to Duluth.

He too hopes Guy's prediction comes true.

As visitors make fall tours they often stop to see the highlights of the city.

Anytime we can get visitors to Duluth we're happy.

In Duluth I'm David Hoole for Nature Matters.

Visit Duluth is working on a fall color promotion travel guide expected to be up and running soon.
