Duluth Clinic Helps Cancer Patients Feel Comfortable In Bodies

By KBJR News 1

The American Cancer Society estimates that more than one million cases of cancer have been diagnosed within the United States in the last year.

Chemotherapy, among the most common treatments for cancer is a grueling treatment, often with side effects including hair loss.

Laura Langemo tells us how the Duluth Clinic is working to help cancer patients feel comfortable as their bodies undergo changes from this vicious disease.

Phyllis Louze was diagnosed with ovarian cancer six years ago.
Throughout those six years Phyllis has lost her hair three times due to her chemotherapy treatments.

"A loss of hair at first is quite drastic, but, of course, it's understandable."

To help cancer patients cope the Duluth Clinic has opened what it calls "The Beautiful You Wig Room."

The room is filled with all types of wigs, hats, and scarves cancer patients can take free of charge.

Cancer survivor Marcy Kernez became inspired to help open the wig room.

"I really understand what it's like to be a person diagnosed with cancer and to walk that journey.

"The Beautiful You Wig Room" opened last September with the help of the Miller-Dwan Foundation and the Duluth Cancer Center.

"I loved it I never had so much hair in my whole life I thought now I got nice curly, thick hair."

Many of the patients say they feel a sense of security looking for a wig around people who understand what their going through.

"It makes me feel good. They make you feel so at home here and there's a very good staff."

Along with Phyllis, many of the cancer patients at the Duluth clinic are keeping their heads up and taking things one day at a time.

"I'm ready to go another hundred thousand miles, a few more years."
