Vote Yes For Kids

Supporters of an operational levy say Duluth Public School students could soon see several major cut-backs, if voters turn down the measure on the ballot in November.

One advocacy group is doing everything it can to make sure students continue to get a well-rounded education.

"I'm really thankful for what I received from Duluth public schools. It opened doors for me and provided tremendous opportunity for me throughout life," said Linda LeGarde Grover, a Duluth resident and mother of three girls whom she says also received a great education in Duluth Public Schools.

She wants to make sure all Duluth students get that same opportunity.

In order to do that, she, and an advocacy group, "Vote Yes For Kids," are working to ensure the district's up-coming operational levy proposal passes.

"The Duluth Public Schools are facing a potential $7.7 Million deficit next year without passage of this levy. That is real money, with real and devastating implications that will change the face of education in Duluth," said Paul Goossens, a father of children in Duluth Public Schools.

Duluth's current levy of $365 per student expires come 2009.

"I think this is a golden opportunity for us to be able to restore some programs to our kids that we used to have," Grover said.

There will be three "Yes" voting options on the ballot November 4th.

The first asks tax-payers to renew the current levy: which means there will be no new taxes, but about $3 million in budget cuts.

The second asks for $700 per pupil.

For the average Duluth resident, that would mean a tax increase of about $8.00 for month.

The final question asks for $1,200 per pupil, which adds up to about $20 a month for the average Duluth household.

Goossens said, "The second or third vote is not considered until the previous ones are voted in the affirmative."

Right now the group has about 75 volunteers to help spread the word and put up flyers and signs.

Some Duluthians are confused that the levy is part of the long – range facilities plan.

However, the two are not related.
