Deer And Driving Safety Tips

By KBJR News 1

Fall is here and the weather is cooling and that means white-tail deer will be on the move.

The animals are moving to find food to put on fat for the winter.

The Northland's deer population continues to be higher than normal so an increase in car-deer collisions this autumn is expected.

The Minnesota D.N.R. wants to remind drivers not to panic if a deer jumps in front of them.

If you see a deer on the road, it's best not to avoid it because you could swerve into a ditch or another car so it's usually best to go straight because you don't know where that deer will go. If you have to hit the deer you have to hit the deer.

The deer herd population in Wisconsin is also highest this time of year.

Law enforcement officials say about 18,000 motorists hit a deer last year in Wisconsin. And the majority of those accidents
happened in October and November when the deer are mating.

Dawn and dusk are when deer are moving from bedding to feeding areas and are especially active.
