Debate Viewing Party

By KBJR News 1

Northlanders descended on Barker's Island this evening to get their take on the Vice Presidential Candidates.
AARP organized a non-partisan, debate-viewing get-together.
Joel Runck was on-hand and has more.

AARP Wisconsin is taking part in a 48-city voter express tour in the six weeks leading up to the November Election.
A crowd of more than 60 came to hear what Republcian Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska and Democratic Senator, Joe Biden of Delaware, would do should they attain the Vice Presidency.

"What we're really trying to do is engage citizens in key issues that are important to the 50-plus population Things like healthcare, obviously financial security right now is on everyone's mind," said Jim Flaherty, organizer.

And Richard Ratchman of Phillips, Wisconsin said when it comes to the big issues, he wants more action than rhetoric--especially on the proposed $700 billion Wall Street Bailout.

"I believe that Americans do have two fundamental rights that we don't see today, one is affordable healthcare for all Americans and the other one is achieving a level of financial security," he said.

Organizers of the debate here at Barker's Island say the event is more than just talking politics--it's about getting the facts straight.

"They're not Democrat issues, they're not Republican issues, these are American issues that we all share," said Flaherty.

John Williams of Superior, says he wants the candidates to make sure his life savings stays intact.

"One issue that is important right now is this bailout," Williams said. "That is just a huge thing because it affects my savings for retirement."

Whichever candidate succeeds, Flaherty says he just wants Senator Biden and Governor Palin to realize one thing.

"We're sick of the rhetoric, we are demanding that you come together with real partisan solutions to these real issues that are frankly really killing people out there," he said.

AARP 90 percent of their 40 million members participate in voting.
