Mining Co. May Be In Danger Of Violating MN Law

By KBJR News 1

The Minnesota Center For Environmental Advocacy has sent the Department of Natural Resources a letter saying the "Polymet" non ferrous mining plan for the Iron Range, may be in danger of violating Minnesota law.

The environmental group claims Polymet has not looked at a common alternative to open pit mining as they work toward opening a facility to mine copper, nickel, gold, platinum and palladium.

The Polymet mine is being planned on the site of the former LTV taconite mine near Hoyt Lakes.

The group says Polymet should consider underground mining because it would be environmentally safer and provide more jobs.

The Center for Environmental Advocacy claims open pit mining with these types of metals will expose the sulfides to air and water creating sulfuric acid.

The letter was sent to the DNR Monday.

There has been no response as of yet.
