Candidates Campaign On Iron Range

By KBJR News 1

The November election is less than a month away, and candidates on both sides talked about issues like health care on the Iron Range Monday.

Senator Norm Coleman was in Grand Rapids, and supporters of presidential candidate Barack Obama gathered in Virginia.

Chris Buckley was at both events...and reports that a top issue was health insurance.

But she starts with Coleman's thoughts on the Wall Street bailout.

First, it's necessary because of the impact on Main Street America.

Al Franken, by the way, was only against the bailout after I voted for it, he had no position before that. It's about Main Street..

What we got is no golden parachutes, limits on executive compensation, taxpayer protection, so the money comes back to taxpayers, not Wall Street."

He says in these tough times, Minnesota needs continued leadership in the US Senate.

"Folks worried about insurance, jobs, and the answer doesn't lie in more government programs, higher taxes, healthcare that the government runs, it lies in establishing a firmer economy, tapping into the entrepreneurial spirit, giving people the ability to enjoy the greatness God has given us, especially in this neck of the woods."

On the east side of the Range, local DFL leaders talked about the potential consequences of John McCain's health care plan- which would tax employer-provided health insurance benefits - on local workers.

"The unions on the Iron Range have fought for over 100 years to get health insurance for their workers, now to be taxed on that, I'm sure premiums on a family of four is worth a thousand dollars a month, take that and put 25-30 percent tax on it, that's what's going to happen to people on the Range with steelworkers and the building trades, people that have insurance through their employer. It's a slap in the face to middle America."

That report shows that more than 430,000 Minnesota residents don't have health insurance... and more than 3 million rely on employer-provided benefits.
