Foster Grandma Nominated For Women In Leadership Award

By KBJR News 1

Over the past few weeks, we've been profiling the 2008 women in leadership award winners.

Dave Anderson tells us about the tenth and final recipient.
She's a foster grandma at an elementary school.

Nora Packingham has several volunteer helpers in her kindergarten class.

Most are moms, but there's at least one grandma.
Doris Ceryes helps out through the foster grandma program.

"I saw this ad in the paper for the foster grandparent program and I started and was accepted and started doing that and I really love working with little kids."

Doris helps the kids with all the standard lessons in a kindergartener's repertoire.

"I help them to read, color, help them to cut out things and help them glue."

In a way, Doris is the glue that holds this class together.
Some of the little ones don't have grandma's of their own.

"I think they crave that attention and affection that I can give to them."

Doris thinks others can help give that attention and affection easily.

"I don't think it requires any special talent, just love of children and having a lot of patience."
