Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) - In 2012, there were 315 new cases of HIV reported, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 7,516.

That's an eight percent increase since 2011.

39 percent of the new cases were in Minneapolis, 14 percent in Saint Paul, 30 percent in the Metro suburban area, and 17 percent in Greater Minnesota.

While HIV cases in women are down 19 percent, women of color made up 82 percent of new cases among women in 2012.

Officials suggest that treatment is a growing form of prevention, as those in treatment see an over 90 percent reduction in their transmission rate.
