This is 5–year old Paris's third year trick–or–treating... and she's already picked out the perfect costume.

"I'm going to be a fairy with feather wings and with a colored dress"

But for some, Halloween isn't always a fairy tail.
Over the past 3 years, 17 traffic deaths occurred on Minnesota roads on Halloween.

This year, an estimated 93–percent of American children will dress–up and venture house to house on a quest for goodies.

"We just always make sure they're holding our hands across the street, we check their candy when they get back to the house, make sure that it's wrapped and sealed.""

Safety officials recommend marking your child's clothing with reflective tape, carrying a flash light, staying on sidewalks and using cross walks.

They also suggest attaching a child's name and address to their clothing in case they get lost.

And perhaps most importantly always establish a safe route for trick or treating.

But its not just parents and kids that need to think about safety...

"While spooky costumes and bad candy can be frightening... The Minnesota Department of Public safety says the scariest people on Halloween are those who choose to drive inattentively or under the influence of alcohol."

Between 2005 and 2007, more than 15–hundred motorists were arrested on Halloween for drunken driving.

"Make some good choices, plan ahead, leave your vehicle at home, bring a taxi, or get a driver, so you don't have to make those decisions after you've had something to drink."

State Patrol Sergeant Mark Baker says they expect the roads to be busier than usual this year as the holiday falls on a Friday.
He advises all drivers to be extra aware of their surroundings as children often dart out on the roads.

"Whether its cell phones, whether it's GPS systems, other people in the car, when you're out driving and the kids are out trick–or–treating in those neighborhoods by all means be attentive."
