Who will fill Reinert's Seat on the city council?

By KBJR News 1

Duluth City Council President Roger Reinert will soon occupy Mike Jaros' seven-'B' seat in the Minnesota State Legislature.
Now the question remains...who will take over his city council seat?

Officials say the council will appoint a successor for Reinert's seat.

Reinert says applications can be picked-up on Wednesday.
Duluthians have until December 1st to return the forms to the city clerk.

Councilors say a new member will be chosen sometime in January.

"I intend to complete my year as a councilor, my year as a council president, which at least through the state of the city is January 5th I'll do a resignation sometime shortly thereafter," said Reinerty.

At Monday's meeting, Duluth City Councilors decided to table a resolution that would have created a $200 sump-pump inspection fee.
In other action the council approved a resolution that Authorizes Clarion Associates of Colorado to develop and implement a new comprehensive plan for Duluth.

The council also approved a measure that authorizes the purchase of two new police cars in the amount of approximately $41,000.
The council also gave the nod to purchase of an Asphalt Zipper--a machine that will used for street-related work.
City administration says the piece of equipment is critical when it comes to fixing Duluth's roadways.

"I think it's very important for us to think about how in fact are we going to continue to keep up obviously deteriorating streets if we don't look at better technology and that's in fact what the zipper is," said Lisa Potswald, city chief administrative officer.

But councilor Jay Fosle though otherwise.

"As government entity, I find it astounding we would go into the business of blacktopping to compete with a private business," he said. " I would think as a city, we would be opening our arms to business not competing with them."

The Asphalt Zipper machine is expected to cost around $116,000.
