Group Hopes To Make Foreign Language School A Reality

By KBJR News 1

By this time next year...students in Superior may have the chance to attend a language immersion school.

A group of parents are working to generate support for a school where children learn all subjects in a foreign language.

At a meeting Tuesday Night at Superior High School... they were hoping to get a sense of how many families in the community are interested in this type of education.

"You know we'd love to see a hundred if possible. I think we could start with a little bit less then that and if we can get that kind of interest, but the hundred is kind of our magic number that we'd like to attack.

"Parents for immersion education" organizers say if enough interest exists...they are confident they will make immersion education, beginning with kindergarten, a reality in Superior as soon as next fall....

If you'd like more information on this effort, you can go to their website: superiorimmersion.org.

We need to take care of students in the mainstream first. Many students could benefit from more special needs services with additional funding. Having a immersions type of program will only benefit a few. However, we need to look at the big picture and the goal of any school educational program is to give ALL students the best education possible - NOT JUST A FEW....

At the meeting last night, we though we might be interested but not after that meeting. Good luck getting 100 kids, especially since you called over 400 families and about 5 showed up.

Sending your children to an immersion school is not, nor will it become, mandatory. Like sending your children to a private school, it is your choice.

Um...because Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, second only to Chinese. Not to mention that we (Americans) tend to think that our culture is the only or only important one on Earth. We need to think more globally. Also, learning a foreign language at a young age has shown to improve one's usage of one's native language. That may have eliminated this problem: "whose" is used incorrectly. What you are looking for is the contraction for "who is" which is "who's".
