Fire Protection In Cook County

By KBJR Manager

A federal grant will help Cook County homeowners install sprinkler systems designed to protect their houses from forest fires.

Today, Congressman Jim Oberstar announced a $3 million grant from the Federal Emergency Management Administration.

The FEMA grants will help homeowners and long term cabin lease holders install the sprinkler systems which they will own and maintain.

In 2000, Oberstar helped obtain $438,000 to install sprinkler systems on homes in the BWCA blow-down area.

Last year, he included $450,000 in an appropriations bill to pay for additional sprinkler systems and other fire mitigation efforts in the same area.

3 million dollars for WHAT? You've got to be kidding. How about spending that on Katrina victims who have no house or cabin at all? If nothing else, put it toward our 10 trillion dollar deficit. I know that's a little less exciting and doesn't grab a headline for Mr. Oberstar, but it would be the right thing to do.
