Cutting Corners on Pet Care

By KBJR News 2

The nation's economic crisis is forcing some pet owners to cut corners when it comes to care for their companions. Kevin Jacobsen spoke with several pet experts in the Northland and reports the crisis hasn't impacted pet care just yet.

Patty St. Onge makes sure Mara, her American Water Spaniel gets her annual checkup, despite the current economic times.

"We'll cut back on a lot of other things before we cut back on their healthcare" says St. Onge.

Dr. Tom Dougherty who owns a clinic in Duluth says he hasn't seen anyone cutting back, but knows his steady stream of clients could drop at any time.

"We're anticipating that there is going to be some influence on our practice" he says.

Dougherty warns: the essentials for pet owners are important.

"Sometimes you can be penny wise and pound foolish and not picking up disease process at the annual exam can really cost you a lot more money in the future."

Betsy Bode with the Duluth Animal Shelter says "You still have to provide the basic healthcare for your animals, the annual checkups and the annual shots are extremely important."

Bode adds if you're trying to save money, scale back on the optional stuff.

"Just like we do in our own lives, cut back on the treats, cut back on the toys. Cats, there are a lot of homemade toys you can provide them with that are suitable."

She says even if the crisis is hurting your bottom line; don't shortchange your pet.

"Companion animals are such an important part of our lives, perhaps if you are going through a hard time– that's when you need them the most."

Other Veterinarians in Duluth tell the Northland's NewsCenter they haven't seen a change in clients either but are anticipating pet care cut–backs in the future.
