Your chance to own a piece of Duluth History is almost over. The Duluth Harbor South Breakwater Lighthouse auction closes December 1st. So what would you do if you won the lighthouse? Kevin Jacobsen found out.

It's an historic piece built in the early 1900's that is no longer used by the U.S Coast Guard. Two other lighthouses along the pier have picked up the workload.
So instead of letting the 68 foot structure go to waste, the US Government is in search of a new owner.

"The lighthouse has been around, my understanding as long as that bridge has been around," said Patrick Lammerson, the Executive Petty Officer for the U.S. Coast Guard in Duluth.

The auction opened up back in September on the internet. Folks interested were invited on a tour of the property at a cost of $5,000 each.

"They had to put down a deposit, so the coast guard would get legitimate bidders," Lammerson said.

So what would people do with a lighthouse?

Dave Spangler who is visiting Duluth said, "If I had a lake property, I would put it on the lake property, it be a nice ornamental piece for the property."

While someone will spend their hard earned cash to call the lighthouse their own, it will remain the property of the United States. The sale will come with several stipulations like... it can't be moved.

"I don't think I'd want it then, I'd want to take it with me," Spangler said.

Some say they wouldn't mind keeping the lighthouse where it is, and make do.

Laurie Lemieux said she would "probably keep it and use it as a guest house or a little tea spot for a coffee house and kept it locally here."

The lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. At last check bidding for the tower was at $16-thousand dollars.
