Your Green Life: Sipping Sustainably

Many of us love grabbing our favorite cup of joe, but how do you know if what you are sipping is sustainable?

One environmental group is teaching you to look for the "frog" as meteorologist Shannon Murphy explains in, "Your Green Life."

Americans drink a staggering four hundred million cups of coffee each day!

But how sustainable are those beans in your cup?

"The frog tells you that you're helping make the world a better place," said Tensie Whelan of the Rainforest Alliance.

The Rainforest Alliance, a non profit organization dedicated to protecting forests and promoting sustainable farming, made it easy by giving out the frog of approval.

To earn the mark, farms must practice fair trade and take care of the land.

That goes for any crop grown on rainforest alliance certified land.

The frog was chosen to represent because it's an indicator species.

"It means if there's something wrong with frogs, there's something wrong with the habitat," said Whelan.

Now it is up to the power of the consumer to make the change.

"Companies worry about whether or not there is consumer demand, but what I tell those companies is, is not that consumers demanded a ruffle potato chip, you helped us think we wanted a ruffle chip... so you as a company... really do want sustainable products," said Whelan.

It's about redesigning the future for us, our kids, and our grandkids.

We can make the difference by paying attention to where everything comes from... even the morning cup of Joe.

You can also look for the Rainforest Certification on many fruits, cocoa, and tea.
