Young Woman Battles Disease

By KBJR News 1

Most high school students are only thinking about homework, hanging out with friends and members of the opposite sex.

But for Superior High School Senior Meagan Barnard, high school has been a bit of a challenge.

Flash back to Meagan's freshman year.

She was an up and coming star basketball player, a dance line fanatic and a fire twirler for a local dance studio.

Some bad news changed all that.

Meagan says "I have primary lymphedema precox, it's in one leg and it is where the lymph nodes are underdeveloped or not there at all and they can not process the fluid in the lymphatic system and that causes swelling."

Lymphadema is incredibly rare... and worst of all, it's an incurable disease.
Meagan and her family saw a host of doctors and held out hope that her condition might be curable, but after going to the Mayo Clinic, doctors there informed her that her life would never be the same.

She says "Knowing that for the rest of my life I'll have to deal with it was really hard; I didn't think I'd be able to come around from it and for the past years I haven't been able to come around from it."

Meagan's condition also took a toll on the rest of the family.

Meagan's mom Kelly says "To see some one have to change their goals just because of a medical condition that was really hard to watch that, she wanted to go into modeling, there were things she wanted to do; now she won't be able to."

Things are looking up for Meagan though and it started with a pair of pants.

Meagan says "For about two years I've not been able to wear jeans at all because they don't make jeans for people that have one leg bigger than the other so when I talked to cast clothing I sent them my measurements and they custom made jeans for me and they are currently doing that that's been a huge deal because wearing sweat shirts and sweat pants to school everyday gets a little old."

Meagan was so impressed with her new pants she decided to help others suffering from similar ailments.

For her senior project Meagan is creating her own magazine for people that suffer from lymphedema and breast cancer.

She hopes that through the magazine she can touch someone's life like she was touched by that one pair of jeans.

Meagan says "I'm trying to reach out to them and let them know there are companies out there that can benefit their lives."

Megan's mom Kelly says the magazine has helped Meagan open up about her condition.

Kelly says "Now she can actually tell people the truth which will benefit her and lymphodema."

Besides planning the magazine, Meagan is staying busy during her senior year.
She's coaching dance, playing rec league basketball, and preparing for the big Christmas dance.

Meagan is still looking for a publisher for her magazine and she says all proceeds from the magazine sales will benefit the Lymphedema Research Foundation.

I have given money to that foundation as well. I think it is a great organization. Many suffer silently with lymphedema from cancer, being born with it, etc. Peggy Anderson, Duluth, maande1@charter.net
