Careless Disposal of Cigarette Causes Blaze

The careless disposal of a cigarette in a trash can is responsible for a fire that nearly destroyed a Gary boarding house last night.

The Duluth Fire Department responded to the blaze just after 2 AM.

The flames were contained to a single room and the automatic sprinkler system had been activated.

Crews extinguished the fire, ventilated the building, and helped evacuate the water from the sprinkler system.

The building manager suffered minor injuries related to smoke inhalation after attempting to enter the room prior to the arrival of firefighters.

He was evaluated by Gold Cross and released on the scene.

Early structural damage is estimated at about $10,000.
