Results of Duluth Citizen Survey Released

By KBJR News 1

The results of a Duluth citizen survey have been unveiled and the views are mixed.

While many residents said Duluth is a favorable place to live, the community didn't fair well in some important categories. One of the biggest areas of concern was the condition of city streets.

Potholes are a problem in many parts of the city. Only two percent of those surveyed said street repair services are "excellent" or even "good."

Some residents say the street situation is one of their top concerns. When it comes to transportation, some residents say potholes are a big issue.

"I agree with that being one of the major problems you hear it all the time and see it," said Dennis Birchland of Duluth.

City officials say they're working on the street problem with a plan to fix 15 to 20 miles of roadway each year over the next 5 years. The city says they are using the survey results to examine the street situation and take action.

"Any community is going to have issues and this is a snapshot of where we are today," Mayor Don Ness of the City of Duluth.

Even though some city services received below-average marks, some say you have to look at the big picture.

"This is a tool, not necessarily to say 'let's place blame on what happened in the past,' but rather a tool to say here's where we are today, how can we improve," said Ness.

There was significant concern about public safety during the hours when it's dark outside. But Birchland says there's more good to be found than bad in Duluth.

"Seasons, the changes that we have here, just the natural beauty, (and) most the people--it's just a wonderful place to live," said Birchland.

The survey involved 535 residents. The city spent about $8,000 on the analysis. The mayor says a similar survey is being planned for next year.

Did they really need a survey to find out that Duluth streets are in really poor condition? I live by the hositals and all I have to say is if I ever break anything I do not want my husband driving me to the ER. The jarring would probably cause even more damage! I'd walk.
