Along with Independence Day, the July 4 date marks the 10-year anniversary of the devastating blowdown across Minnesota's pristine Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
A decade ago, a huge storm roared across the remote woods, trapping hundreds of campers, uprooting millions of trees and setting the stage for a series of massive forest fires that would ignite years later.
While much of the 500-thousand square foot area has begun to heal, the forest service reports the potential for wildfires still exist as a result of the blowdown.
