Woman Injured By Gunshot in Superior, Suspect Arrested

By KBJR News 1

A terrifying incident at a popular Superior gay bar last night sent one woman to the hospital and one man to jail.

Just after 10 o'clock Saturday night, a woman in the parking lot of JT's Bar and Grill in Superior became the victim of a shooting.

Police say the gunshots came from an area a couple of blocks away behind the Viking bar and struck the woman in the foot.

What was originally believed to be an injury from a stray firework was quickly determined by Superior Police to be the result of a gunshot wound instead.

A bartender at JT's tells us he later found a bullet shell near the scene.
While officers were still on the scene interviewing witnesses, a number of rounds struck a vehicle they were standing by.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Department and the Emergency Response Team were called immediately to the scene and a three block radius was put on lock down.

The atmosphere was tense inside the bar. Just after the incident, no one was allowed to go in our out for two and a half hours.

Employees and managers at the Viking Bar and JT's declined to go on camera, but said everything is back to normal and business is as usual.

One manager at JT's said, however, that the night really shook her up. She and another person were barricaded by an armored vehicle outside directly following the incident for more than two hours.

Police later found what they believe to be the weapon used in the shooting.

They also have a 41-year old man in the Douglas County Jail awaiting two felony charges of Causing Injury by Negligent Handling of a weapon, and possession of a firearm. He is also being detained on a probation and parole hold. Charges are expected to be filed on Monday.

The victim of the gunshot wound was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Superior. Early this morning, she underwent foot surgery and is in stable condition.

When there are crimes, why doesn't the article begin.. shooting suspect arrested at a popular straight bar? Because it's moronic! If it had been at Stargate, would the opening have been" shooting outside at a popular black people bar"? Time to hire a better reporter and/or editor!

TJ is a gay bar? Wow, I didn't know that. Here I though everyone there was just super friendly!!! ;)

An expended bullet was found...not a "bullet shell" which is a reflection of the level of reporter's knowledge of firearms (or lack thereof) doesn't even exist.

first of all it wasn't a hate crime....there's no proof yet that the suspect in custody shot that women or at the bar....how is it that a bullet shell was found near the scene (JT'S) if he was target shooting behind the viking?? that's proof right there that it wasn't him...cops just need someone to blame right now.

This article was written rather poorly.

Assault I is a Minnesota crime. He's charged with offenses in Wisconsin, and as a result the charge that he was arrested on likely meets the statutory definition for the crimes in Superior. For it to be charged as a hate crime (which is an enhancer in Wisconsin...not a separate charge) it would have to be proven that he intentionally shot at the bar/patrons due to the fact that they were gay....not that he was just shooting and it happened to hit someone.

How can he be charged with Negligent handling of a firearm and possession? Negligent is when someone takes a gun out of a case and it accidently goes off. In this case many shots were fired on 2 separate occasions. This is a hate crime on a local gay bar. The woman could have been killed. Shouldnt it be at least Assault I. The community should be outraged...

fed up: You've got to be kidding me. Are you really that stupid? So the police should let people roam around willy-nilly while someone is firing off rounds from a rifle in a downtown area? You truly are a moron if that's seriously what you believe.

Not a good situation, but if they keep locking down several blocks at a time for these instances we're gonna be in a world of trouble! These so called " Emergency Response Teams" are nothing more than Jack boot thugs here to wipe out the rest of our rights.
