Duluth, Minnesota, September 7, 2010—As another school year begins, Five Points is seeking community members to volunteer as academic mentors with its school-based mentoring program.

To kick off the “Step Up For Students” Recruitment Campaign and reach their goal of recruiting mentors for every student enrolled in the program, Five Points will be hosting Open Houses on Tuesday, September 7th at three Wells Fargo Bank locations.

The Open Houses will be held at Wells Fargo in the Denfeld, Miller Hill, and Downtown Duluth locations from 11:00am to 1:00pm and will feature information for community members to learn about the volunteer opportunities and sites supporting the Five Points program.

Come stop by for this free event to learn how to step up for students and join the Five Points program.

In addition, Five Points is seeking donations of supplies for tutors and their matches to use in the coming year.

From September 7th-11th, all Duluth Well Fargo locations will serve as drop-off points for donations, including board or card games, healthy snacks and basic school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks, planners, graph paper, folders, pencils, flashcards, poster board, reference books, and other academic resources that may be valuable learning tools for students.

“The Five Points program believes that every child deserves to have someone in their life whom they can count on to be there during childhood successes and struggles, someone who will take the time to listen, help develop a positive self-image, enhance their sense of well-being, and provide hope and encouragement,” says Cheryl Skafte, Program Coordinator for Five Points.

Volunteers meet with the same student at the same program site once a week during the school year to work on homework and spend time building a friendship.

There are over 14 program sites in Duluth, Hermantown and Proctor.

For more information about becoming a volunteer, community members are encouraged to join us at the Open Houses or visit us online at www.5pointstutor.org.

Five Points is a part of the Mentor Duluth Collaboration, which consists of seven youth-serving agencies, which include the Duluth Area Family YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of the Northland, Copeland Community Center, Neighborhood Youth Services, Proctor Hermantown Community Education, Valley Youth Center and the YWCA of Duluth.

The program is dedicated to matching adult academic mentors with children in Duluth area schools in grades K-12.
