Drowning Victim Was Seen Jumping Into Whirlpool In River

By KBJR News 1

Independence Day proved deadly for a man from Ramsey, Minnesota who went for a swim in the Temperance River along the North Shore this weekend.

The Coast Guard reports that 45 year old Ari Sommerfeld was seen jumping into a whirlpool in the river.

Witnesses say he never came up.

Along with a Coast Guard boat from Grand Marais and helicopter from Michigan, responders included the Cook County Sheriff, Tofte First Responders and Rescue Squads from Cook, Lake and Saint Louis Counties.

Two people drowned in the Temperance River last year.

Coast Guard officials warn swimmers to be extra careful in rivers.

"The Coast Guard advises all people swimming in rivers to know the current and avoid fast water. Do not swim alone and make sure you wear a Coast Guard approved life jacket."

Sommerfeld's body was found on July 5th in a deep pool near Lake Superior.
