Franken Sworn In As Minnesota Senator

By KBJR News 1

Minnesota comedian–turned–politician Al Franken is now a U–S senator.

After eight long months of recounts and wrangling Al Franken has officially taken the seat as Minnesota's newest U.S senator.

Today's swearing in gives Minnesotans a second voice in Washington plus gives Democrats the 60 votes needed to thwart possible Republican filibusters.

Vice President Joe Biden administered Franken's oath at the nation's capitol today, slapping the former Saturday Night Live performer on the back, then embracing him.

Franken was introduced by fellow Minnesotan and Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar.

"He's toured home grown businesses, he's stood with workers, he's been to veteran's halls, and he's gone to college campuses. He's been there day in and day out, listening to the people of Minnesota, now he has the honor and responsibility to serve them in the United State's capitol."

Last week the Minnesota Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Franken's favor after a protracted recount and his opponent, former Republican Senator Norm Coleman, conceded.

Franken took the oath on a Bible that belonged to the family of late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone.

Senator Klobuchar says although being a United States senator takes some getting used to, she's confident that Franken can adapt and they can successfully work together to fill Minnesota's needs.

Franken will serve on four committees, including the committee on Indian affairs, the select committee on aging, the judiciary committee and a long–term planning health committee.
