Neighborhood Impact Team

By KBJR News 1

Duluth Police say there's no shortage of calls during the summer months and Lt. Eric Rish says the Neighborhood Impact Team is looking for troublemakers.

"We're going to send those 'NIT' officers to places that we see are problems," Rish said. "They're the heat seekers--they're going in to eliminate the problem."

Rish oversees the team and says the group can alter its workspace on a moments notice.

"We can change their focus in a day--we can go to a different area or a different problem," Rish said.

Police say they're working on various crime hot spots throughout the city, including portions of First Street.

One resident says extra cops are a good move.

"Right in the First Street, downtown area, there's a lot of things going on around here, you know, underground stuff, police don't know about," said Kyle Adkins of Duluth.

Aside from crime prevention efforts, police say the Neighborhood Impact Team also works with business owners.

Ken Bluedorn, owner of Lake Superior Bottle Shop hasn't seen too many problems brew near his business and says the impact team can't hurt.

"I think it is a really good idea because part of the thing is that there's only a few people that create the problems in the neighborhood," he said.

Police say The Neighborhood Impact Team is doing just what's its name says.

"They've impacted First Street by reducing some of the nuisance calls, they've been working on sales of narcotics hand-to-hand."

Police say the Neighborhood Impact Team will see a third officer become part of the crew in the near future.

Great idea should have more than three officers doing this. Have them patrol at the major dta bus stop-- hub area on Superior street.
