Coast Guard Cutter Alder Gets New Commanding Officer

"Hand salute!" commanded the Executive Officer of the USCGC Alder.

Commander Kevin Wirth of the Coast Guard Cutter Alder inspected his crew for the last time Wednesday morning.

He's on his way to a post in Washington D.C.

Taking over is Lieutenant Commander Mary Ellen J. Durley after a tour of duty in Yorktown, Virginia.

"Sir, I offer my relief." said LCDR Durley.

"Today, I am excited by the opportunity to return to fresh water and command such a fine ship and exceptional crew." said Durley.

Attending the ceremony were active duty Coasties, Reservists and Auxiliarists.

Leaving the 225 foot buoy tender Alder left a tear in Commander Wirth's eye.

After three years in the Northland, he'll miss the region.

"I've lived in Florida and Hawaii but the people in Duluth are by far the warmest people in one of the coldest places I've ever lived." said CDR Wirth.

"Commander, U.S. Coast Guard departing!" said the Alder's Executive Officer as the Change of Command ceremony ended.

The Alder's many missions include tending buoys, breaking ice, search and rescue and maritime law enforcement.
