One of a Kind Classroom Opens in Superior

By KBJR News 2

The Millennium trail in Superior is known for it's cross country skiing in the winter and biking and walking in the summer.

Now the trail has a new role...a school.

Superior Parks and Rec Administrator Mary Morgan said "Today we're celebrating the establishment of the superior municipal forest first ever outdoor class room and along with that a number of interpretive signs have been established along the Millennium trail."

The 25-thousand dollar project was made possible by grants from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Superior City Council President Dan Olson says he hopes use of the trail will increase due to the forest classroom.

"It's an extraordinary opportunity for the kids something we've never had before open up the trail a little bit and get to use the municipal forest that's hear for a reason."

The classroom in the woods has room for roughly fifty students and teachers say that a wide variety of subjects can be taught there.

Judy Hack a teacher in Superior said "It's very nice to bring a school out here and have your outdoor classroom not only for science but you can do math dealing with patterns, you can bring your English groups in here, your art groups it can become an outdoor classroom."

The Superior Parks and Rec Department is already taking reservations for the classroom.

The outdoor classroom was built after Superior teachers completed a survey indicating what they needed to teach in an outdoor setting.
