The UMD grad student stranded in Brazil while on a research project says he's getting by thanks to the help of locals.

Kelly Wendt, 26, was arrested in June for visa violations and suspicion of poaching. Wendt and two other American students are in the country working on a climate change project. The men entered the country on tourist visas but as researchers need scientific visas.

Wendt told the Northland's NewsCenter on the phone he and the two others are doing much better than they were.

"They've been really supportive, driving us around from point a to point b. I don't know how we'd get around without them, they take us out and show us a good time and keep us upbeat and positive all the time," said Wendt.

The three students spent eight nights in jail before being released on bail last month. Tomorrow they'll head to the American consulate to see what options they have available.
