Duluth Central Hillside Shooting

By KBJR News 1

A Duluth family is in mourning after a young father was shot to death in a barrage of gunfire.

Curtis Michael Cooney, 22, was shot in the head after a dispute at a home on the 400 block of Second Avenue East. Cooney's father tells the Northland's NewCenter Curtis was everybody's friend and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The victim leaves behind his own son, Michael, who will be two years old next month.

Police were called to the 400 block of Second Avenue East just after ten last night. When they got there they found the two gunshot victims.

An ambulance took the shooting victims to the hospital but one man had been shot in the head and was dead by the time he got to the emergency room.

The other man's leg wound wasn't as serious. He was treated and released.

"We are mourning the loss of a young gentleman. He was a father," says Scott Yeazle, a central hillside resident.

A group of people got together in Duluth's hillside in the afternoon to share their grief and look for ways to make their community safer.

"We got to step up and do something against any crimes that happen in our community," says Yeazle.

Police said it looks like the violence escalated following an argument over a dog.

"There was a dispute at that residence, at that alley, and it involved a small dog. Some words were exchanged including some threats," said Assistant Chief John Beyer of the Duluth Police Department.

An hour and a twenty minutes after the argument police were called to a home a few blocks away.

That's where they found 22 year old Curtis Michael Cooney shot in the head, and 21 year old Ephriam Darell Burks shot in the leg.

"The scene was very very chaotic, we ended up putting multiple people in handcuffs because the scene was so volatile. Trying to get a grip of what actually happened there, we did detain several people, briefly we spoke with multiple individuals but right now no one is in custody," says Assistant Chief Beyer.

Police say the home where they found the victims had been quite troublesome in the past with 12 disturbance calls since January.

Hillside residents say they want to take a stand against crime.

We've got to know who are neighbors are, we've got to say we're not going to take this anymore," said Yeazle.

The Duluth Police Department is asking anyone with information to call their violent crimes unit.

Authorities are looking for three black men believed to be connected to the shootings.

Community leaders are holding a meeting on July 23rd at the community center to talk about fighting crime in the area.

This is the first murder in Duluth this year.

Being that it happened in Duluth, a good guess, but you that made the comment about "Don't anyone have jobs? Must be Duluth residents.." how do you know they didn't have jobs and what does it matter where they are from? Think about that. I find it sad that these men were injured and one killed. The suspect, may or may not have a job, who knows? Who cares? People who are jobless arent likely to be able to afford to be carrying a gun around anyway.

These Stupid thugs up from Chicago to take advantage of MN's wellfare stystem & deal drugs in our part of town need to be found & put away. And yes, it was over a stupid dog! To the anonymous that wrote "don't anyone have jobs?" well, do you? Because if you had any education at all you would have wrote "DOESN'T anyone" & to have a job you need an education! Keep your comments to yourself if you're just going to sound like an idiot! This town needs an a**hole enama!!

Thank the city for less police coverage! If there were more cops on the street there would be less crime!

My guess is these people are renting homes. . .backgrounds of renters have not been checked. . These landlords need to clean up their act. It's a shame what has happened to Central Hillside. Some of the most prime property is being ruined by loiters and people who don't have employment or the desire to be employed.

I agree with Angry Duluth Resident. We need to get all of these stupid people from Chicago out of here. They do not have the Minnesota values I was raised to follow.

Could have nice kept up homes with good working people living in them in the central hillside area. Great property there -- but who would want to live there nowadays? It's a shame.

Angry Duluth Resident.. Thugs can obtain guns from anyone, burglaries, thefts, etc.. if you had a clue, along with most others, this problem would cease. We have been catering to "visitors" and homeless from other cities and states for years, giving money to them, setting up free housing (waiting list, etc..) If you don't believe it, ask the county how someone from out of town that's "homeless" gets on a waiting list for housing, and if no cash, they get a "start up" sum, EBT card, etc. Come On!

Maybe I missed something, but why is anyone claiming that the assailants were from Chicago? To my knowledge neither the police department nor any other credible source has released the names of the suspects much less what city or cities they are from. Perhaps there are simply a few uninformed racists who assume that simply because you are black and live in Duluth that you must A) be from Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, etc.; and B) be taking advantage of MN's welfare laws?

I see it every day. I run a delivery route in the central hillside area. You see them walking through alleys in groups with absolutely nothing to do but look for trouble. Or setting on the front step of their house drinking beer and smoking cigarettes at 2 in the afternoon. They don't have jobs and do not want one. They are perfectly content to sit on the public dole.

People need to grow the hell up and realize that this was all a misunderstanding...no one ever thought this was going to happen to Curtis. All the bs that people are saying is sick, it dont matter if you have a job it don't matter what race you are, people always hurt other people. Just like all the ugly stuff people keep posting up here his family has to read this, so if you don't have anything nice to say then keep your comments to yourself. I love the Conney family and I will always love.

The really sad thing is that before they even released the race of the suspects, I thought that they were probably African American. I don't like to stereotype, but sometimes it is awfully hard not to.

Curtis was my cousin and I would like to say rest in peace. We really do need to work on getting people in this town to be more responsible and cooperative....I can surely say that by the 2014 crime will be over the top considering the ways kids are right now in school. I would know to since I am in the school system

My prayers go out to the gentlemens parents. I didn't know them personally, but its sad. I would like to know what the hell is wrong with DPD they are such rookies that they can't even get a handle on a situation like this, they're so quick to have 10 squad cars when it come to a group of black people that ain't even doin nothin but when it's somethin seriouslike this they don't know how to reacht tasin injured people, stopping a ambulance from coming to do their job,

Peopple like this living in Duluth and the police are nervous about the Hell's Angels coming to town. I think they have bigger issues to worry about.

Tuesday, Jul 14 at 6:44 PM Sue wrote ...

Let's not make gener-alizations. Many of us living in the hillside go to work every day, raise our families to be law abiding and try to be helpful to those around us. I did not know this young man but it is my understanding he did likewise. I am sorry I never had an opportunity to meet him. Rest in peace.

Our president is not black. He is a socialist and was conditioned by the Russian government. Doesn't sound like any of the black people I know...

Tuesday, Jul 14 at 7:43 PM Anonymous wrote ...

I think Curtis definately wasn't the problem. The whole "group" thing is correct. You see all the time "thug lookin" groups walking around throwing up their hands, talking back, being disrespectful, and we acknowledge that, let them do it. Step up people, take Duluth back! The references to Chicago, etc. is because most take the Greyhound up here, and take "residence" in Duluth. So, no, they aren't Chicago residents, but "Duluth" residents according to the welfare office or CHUM. Check it out.

This murder is OUTRAGEOUS!!! Come on Duluth! How can we let these people get away with this??? So sad. Some one needs to stand up and be a hero in this town. Clean it up!

Tuesday, Jul 14 at 9:14 PM Aaron wrote ...

First of all Sue...the cops are not "nervous" about the Hells Angels coming to town so calm down. And second of all whoever Anonymous was that wrote at 223 pm you're an ignorant moron. People have to stop basing they're automatic hate for cops on nothing but BS and actually look at the facts. Sometimes cops make idiotic mistakes but most of the time they're absolutely taking the right action and it just gets misunderstood by citizens that don't understand what's actually going on.

To whom it may concern: Duluth has lost a son. And yet we spend time bickering. Let, join together and try to support this family. Further more lets band together to stop any more people from loosing their lives. So much easier to argue then it is to find a solution.
