A Duluth Family Mourns The Loss Of Their Son

By KBJR News 1

Meanwhile tonight friends, family, and community members continue to mourn the victim of the city's first homicide this year.

LeAnn Wallace has that party of the story.

It was a solemn day in Duluth's Central Hillside neighborhood with many people stopping at the area where 22 year old Curtis Cooney was shot and killed Sunday night.

"I just feel bad for their family and hope that they can get through it," says Duluth resident Leigh Heverdon.

Friends described Curtis as a kind man with a light hearted spirit... friends with everybody.

21 year old Darell Burks, who was shot in the leg during Sunday night's incident, sobbed as he recalled seeing his friend of almost ten years die before his eyes.

Burks says Curtis wasn't at the house for more than 15 minutes before the shootings took place and that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Burks says Curtis wasn't even involved in the night's earlier dispute regarding a dog, the incident police believe lead to the eventual shootings.

A perception among some that the Central Hillside is becoming more violent has some parents concerned for the safety of their children.

"Oh my mom, she does not want me downtown at all, she says it's a bad neighborhood and that she doesn't want anything bad happening to me," says Heveron.

"My mom says she's scared I'm going to end up dead," says Duluth resident Sarah Denny.

Curtis's father Michael told the news center his son will be remembered as a person who'd give the shirt off his back, a man who loved his young son, who trusted people, and who genuinely cared about others, a man, Michael says was taken too soon.

The family is holding a visitation at Jarvi-Dowd on Thursday and the funeral service is being held on Friday.

I agree with cinders. A young man with a life ahead of him shot because he was in the wrong place. I hope they catch who did this. My Thoughts are with his family.

You have a young man murdered, a family in pain over theri loss. Over a ANIMAL? Hopefully the police aren't to busy with the Hells Angles agenda and can find the low life who murdered and shot this other young man..
