Planning Commission says 'No" to Red Plan Environmental Impact Statement

By KBJR News 1

On Tuesday, the Duluth School District's Red Plan cleared a major hurdle in the city council chambers.

The Duluth Planning Commission decided not to require the school district to complete an environmental impact statement as it relates to the Ordean Site--the proposed location for the new Eastern High School.

Tuesday's decision was unanimous. The study would have required the district to further investigate how the Long Range plan would affect the environment.

District officials say they're pleased with the commission's decision because the study could have delayed some parts of the Red Plan for up to a year. The district says appropriate environmental concerns have been looked at.

"They were properly mitigated, and they also reinforce that there's ongoing regulatory and oversight in the process of permitting and plan review," said Kerry Leider of Duluth Public Schools.

The District says construction at Ordean is slated to begin in August.
