The Park Point Beach in Duluth has been named alongside some of the countries most popular beaches Wednesday in a nationwide report.

The 19th annual beach water quality report released by the Natural Defense Council provides a 5 star rating guide of the 200 most popular beaches in the country.

Ratings are based on beach water quality, monitoring frequency and public notification of contamination.

"There are quite a few 5 star popular beaches in the United States.

Gulf Shores Public Beach near Mobil Alabama, Laguna Beach's main Beach, Bolsa Chica state in Huntington Beach California, Crescent Bay in orange county California, Hampton Beach State Park in Rockingham county New Hampshire, and Ocean City in Maryland and Park Point near Duluth Minnesota are just a few."

In Duluth, Park Point's four miles of sandy beaches received a five star rating.

The most common areas for swimming along the Point are at the LaFayette Community Club and at the Beach House in the park.

Meanwhile Environmentalists say more could be done to protect swimming beaches.

"Beach water pollution makes beach water swimmers vulnerable to a range of water borne illnesses including stomach flu, skin rashes, pink eye, hepatitis, respiratory illness and other serious health problems."

"Environment Minnesota" says one of the best ways swimmers can keep themselves safe from water pollution is to wait 24 hours before going in the water after a heavy rainfall.
