Health Care Reform Debate Hits Superior

Health care reform continues to fuel discussions across the nation...and today the debate made a stop in Superior.

United State Senator Herb Kohl is touring Wisconsin meeting with residents…and as LeAnn Wallace reports, a full house of seniors gathered today to talk health care.

"I'm getting an ear full from everybody and that's the way it should be."

"I just don't feel that the government should control it, I think we have some of the best health care in the world and I think we should stick with what we got," says South Range resident Peggy Sislo.

Wisconsin seniors listened intently as Senator Kohl outlined President Obama's plan for reform.

"Some of them are concerned the health care reform may negatively affect Medicare services and it won't. If they hear it from me, they need to believe it from me."

One of the most concerning parts of the reform is a proposed 'end of life' counseling policy. Some have compared that to a 'death panel' where doctors and other caregivers decide who receives care and who shouldn't.

Senator Kohl stressed that's absolutely not true.

"Nobody will be asked or told how and when to get sick and how and when to die. No body's talking about that, but it's a scare tactic that opponents of health care are trying to throw out there to make people, you know, be against health care reform."

Senator Kohl says just about everybody has their own agenda when it comes to health care reform.

"The insurance companies want a health care reform because they'll get more customers. But they don't want a public option. The pharmaceutical companies want a health care reform because the more people that are covered the more drugs they're going to sell but... they don't want a system that would allow the federal government to negotiate with the prices on drugs."

A joint panel of Republicans and Democrats are currently working in Washington to come up with a bi–partisan reform bill that will go before congress for a final vote.

We need to get our heads out of the sand --our existing government plans (Medicare, Medicaid, VA, etc) are out of money -- they are NOT by any stretch of the imagination model systems we should set for this country.

I know that there is a lot of fear about the plans. There are still 5 different plans in the works. The House of Representatives have 3 different versions of the health care insurance reform and the Senate has two versions. Even if you read one bill, the final version is a long way from being completed. Please do not believe everything one TV or radio network tells to scare you. Try getting more sources of info. Watch and listen to competing sources before believing the false fear. PLEASE!

this bill has mnore to do with people control than with health care. and the all of the things people are concerned about are in the congressional bill. they have been read and published by watchgroups. the left means lies, look at history and you will see the big mistake 53% of the voters made!

Saturday, Aug 22 at 8:35 PM John Kay wrote ...

You obviously have not read the bill(s) as I have. First, they will tax us if we don't take it and use our own insurance. Secondly, it will be much cheaper and my insurance company won't compete and, will get out of the business, eventually only leaving government's plan available and, that is what no one wants! They will by default, control the health care and eliminate your choice to have private insurance by undercutting them (and taxing us) out of business. Obviously, you have not read it!

If Senator Kohl is seriously concerned about health cost, he would introduce legislation to: 1) provide for tort reform; 2) Allow citizens of the United Sates to purchase insurance across state lines; 3) exclude abortion and services for illegal immigrants from any governement funding; 4) Support the "Fair Tax" legislation currently in the House of Representatives. 5) Take time to read the bills that are in Congress (5 of them) and project future decisionmaking that these bills allow for.

There are so many unknowns in this reform If they would just publish an outline of what it will be in simple terms, maybe people would not be filling in the unknown with what they think will happen. I think we mistrust government and rightly so. To have a public healthcare run by the government is frightening. If you would tell us that members of congress (who are promoting this reform) will be a part of this "system" that might make us feel better about it.PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS

This is the first in many steps needed to provide affordable healthcare. This reform is just making health insurance affordable, the high healthcare costs will still be paid by the insurance until we can make the system more efficient. Eventually I want to be able to afford healthcare without the need for the insurance middleman. Keep in mind that insurance has been robbing the healthy to pay for the unhealthy for decades driving up the price of healthcare out of reach of the average person/f
