The feds are 'cranking up' the thermostat when it comes to providing heating assistance for Minnesotans.

According to U.S. Congressman Jim Oberstar, the federal government has awarded Minnesota $27 million to help low-income people pay heating bills.

On top of that, another $65 million will subsidize weatherization programs to make homes more energy efficient.

Some say the cash couldn't come at a better time.

"We've needed it for a long time," said Martin Lepak of the Arrowhead Economic Opportunity Agency. "The housing stock in Duluth is in dire need of help. We've got a lot of families out of work."

Oberstar says the weatherization program will also create jobs along with reducing energy bills.
