Ship Owners Sue 2 Northland Businesses

By KBJR News 1

The owners of the Walter J. McCarthy Jr. a 1,000 foot lake vessel have sued two Northland based businesses.

In 2008 the McCarthy Junior struck a piece of submerged concrete at the Hallet Dock in the Duluth-Superior Harbor.

It punched a substantial hole in the vessel causing the ship to take on water which destroyed the engine.

The American Steamship Company is suing Hallet Docks and Fraser Shipyard.

Brent Reichert is the attorney representing the American Steam Ship Company and says while an exact dollar amount for damages hasn't been set he expects it to be in the neighborhood of $5-million.

Officials for Hallet Docks and Fraser Ship yards refused to comment on the pending litigation.
