Search Expands For Missing Wisconsin Kayaker

A search for a missing kayaker intensified Saturday after his truck and belongings were found in the parking lot of a Beaver Bay resort.

Authorities found the missing man's kayak last Tuesday and linked its registration number to 48-year old Douglas Winter of Milwaukee.

Winter had been staying at the Cove Point Lodge in Beaver Bay.

The last call on his cell phone was traced to a friend on Monday evening.

Winter had said he was kayaking on Lake Superior, about two to three miles from shore and the waves were getting fairly large.

That was the last contact Winter had with anyone.

Coast Guard officials want to remind folks that when dealing with cold water and rough conditions, always pay attention to the weather forecast.

Senior Chief Chris Wissen adds, "Dress appropriately for the weather, always wear your life jacket, and always tell a friend or family member where you're going and when you expect to be back."

Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue teams are out expanding their search through the weekend, hoping to find the lost kayaker or clues to Winter's whereabouts.
