Red Plan Opponents Comment On Duluth's School Board Elections

By KBJR News 1

Tuesday's school board elections in Duluth were a mixed bag both for supporters and opponents of the long range facilities plan.
Also known as the Red Plan, it's a controversial readjustment of the Duluth school district and its school buildings.
Former school board member Harry Welty is an opponent of the plan and he and his supporters hoped the school board elections would swing board support away from the plan.
Now that the results are in, it appears half the board will be supporters and half will be opponents of the plan.
"All it means is it looks like there's a two-two split and there will continue to be a red plan majority and the red plan will continue on though fortunately with a few more people to ask questions about it." said Welty.
Welty, who has been a vocal opponent of the plan, says he will be stepping out of the public light now that the school board elections are over.

Crediting Mr. Welty of dividing our community is a bit much. I am certain that there are much deeper issues in our community that keep us divided. The issue with the schools is just one issue. I think it takes a lot of courage to stand up for what one believes is right whether it's a popular view or not. ALL of the residents needed to have a voice whether it was Mr. Welty's or the school board's. All of the resident's deserved to hear about other options so they could vote yesturday.

I for one am glad that Harry Welty is stepping out of the public light. He has done much to divide this community and it will be good to move forward.
