Duluth School Board Members React To Election Results

By KBJR News 1

Duluth voters have spoken and now many are wondering what the implications of last night's election results will be for the school district's Long Range Facilities Plan.

Four incumbents were on the ballot, but only two were re-elected.

Even with a new make-up, there's still a majority on the board to keep the Red Plan moving ahead.

Last night was a time for victory speeches.

"I'm really excited about the results of the election," said Tom Kasper, a school board member-elect.

But what's going to happen with the district's Long Range Facilities Plan?

"I'm committed to staying on track for the Long Range Facility Plan," said Ann Wasson, Duluth School Board member.

Incumbent board members say the Long Range Facilities Plan will remain on course.

"I see that we do have a working majority to continue with facilities plan--I don't see that changing," said Tim Grover, Duluth School Board chairperson.

But one school board member-elect says he has concerns about the Red Plan.

"I think there are schools that we need to replace and there is some consolidation that needs to be done--I don't agree with all of it," said Kasper.

But incumbents say they're ready to finish what has been started.

"I am in total support of the Long Range Facility Plan," said Mary Cameron, Duluth School Board member.

The new school board members will start in January.

Phone calls to member-elect Art Johnston were not returned.

Hypothetically, if the Red Plan were the shift course, Grover says such an action could prove to be very costly and detrimental in the long-term.

School officials say it would also have significant repercussions on bond ratings and borrowing rates

The debate is over. Kasper and Johnston's opinions (unencumbered by facts) are irrelevant. The people have spoken, and they returned two incumbents to keep the district moving Forward. Hey, guess what, Let Duluth Vote? Duluth Voted! And it's moving on and leaving you behind.
