Authorities said today that they have recovered a body that washed up on the shore of Lake Superior.

The Lake County Sheriff's Department received a call about 3 p.m. Thursday alerting them that a body was found in the Flood Bay area, according to a news release. The body was taken to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner for an autopsy to confirm an identity and find a cause of death.

Authorities had been searching for Douglas R. Winter, a 48-year-old Milwaukee Public Schools teacher, who went missing last month while kayaking on Lake Superior. It is not known whether the body found is Winter.

A life jacket was found near the Split Rock Lighthouse near Two Harbors, an area where Winter had been kayaking on Oct. 19.

On Oct. 20, Winter’s orange and white kayak was found on the rocks north of Twin Points, about an hour north of Duluth.

Winter was last heard from about 8:40 p.m. on Oct. 19 when he called a friend to tell her that he was on Lake Superior two to three miles from shore, could not see land and the waves were getting fairly large, the sheriff's department said.

Lake Superior is to big, cold and dangerous to play with and yet people do.
