Health Care Reform Rally In Duluth

The health care reform bill narrowly passed the U. S House of Representatives last weekend and many Northlanders are hoping the Senate will follow suit.

On Saturday, dozens of reform advocates took the steps of the federal building in Duluth. Several organizations were on hand and many held signs about the reform bill.

Organizers say they're hoping for health care reform by the end of the year.

"There are so many people in this country that don't have healthcare," said Sally Munger, organizer. "We know that 44,000 people a year die because they don't have healthcare."

Several people gave speeches during the rally, and the voices of many joined together chanting in favor of reform.

I live in MN,and I am very lucky to take advantage of MN care insurance, but other states do not have any options of cheaper heath care. We need to stand up for them.

Please note, those at the rally were primarily calling for single-payer coverage, which has been largely absent from the national debate but would be vastly cheaper than the current bill (or the current system) and is the only policy that would cover everyone without restrictions. There are currently bills in the legislatures of both Minnesota (Minnesota Health Plan) and Wisconsin (Healthy Wisconsin) for state-wide single payer. We need to support real reform, not the fake version in Congress.

I was at the rally, and there were 75 folks there. Not a huge turnout, but not bad considering it was raining. The photo on this page was taken before the rally began, so it doesn't reflect the full size the rally reached later on.

If this is such a wonderful bill, then why has Congress opted themselves out of it. Healthcare has become a business rather than the nonprofits of past years. You are already paying for the uninsured who go to the ER and that cost is passed along to the consumer, YOU. There needs to be more competition across state lines, which Congress can legislate aye or nay. And you think that Congress is concerned about your needs. I think NOT.

Like the govt. can keep anything under budget. Watch and see, this is going to cost twice what they say it is. The ramifications of this will not come fully to light until 'Bama is long gone. Good luck America with this f%$k story!

If this is such a great idea, then why aren't we trying it out in a few states first to see what happens? Those of you who admit that healthcare is too expensive in this country need to understand that it is BECAUSE of government involvement. They won't allow YOU, the taxpayer to buy insurance across state lines which would INCREASE competition and DECREASE costs. The gov't is in bed with lawyers and won't install Tort Reform- We need to stop the silly lawsuits (not the valid ones).

The fact is America needs a new healthcare policy to be competitive with the rest of the world. People won't build businesses here unless profitable and competitive. Our current health insurance is nearly extortion. We need healthcare not health insurance.

First off it looks like maybe a dozen people are out there making fools of themselves. Why is this newsworthy?? Also which third world country which has nationalized healthcare has put forth any medical advancement whatsoever? All Obama care will do is suck all the money out of health care. No more research and development will take place. What will Jerry Lewis do on Labor Day??

It is past time when people die in this country because they lack the most basic health care. Most European countries provide complete health care for their citizens and still manage to exist. It is cold-hearted and unrealistic to expect people to pay exorbitant health insurance premiums or out of pocket medical expenses at a time when so many people have no work. Are we just supposed to be barbarians and let people die on the street? Aren't we supposed to be human beings and care for others

Health care is a privlidge, not a right. We have enough "socialist" garbage (including the "prsident") we don't need any more.

nobody wants healthcare reform and yet medical bills are the second leading cause of bankruptcy in this nation. we have to start somewhere people. we can't just pretend there isn't a problem. big pharm and insurance have a strangle hold on healthcare and it looks like we MIGHT try to fix it.

While I am for Healthcare, I am felt betrayl since most of the crowd were government employees and party hacks. These poeple are too busy playing politics to really care about the issues.

It's time for people in this nation to grow up and quit expecting the government to be your mommy. The beauty of this country is opportunity and freedom, not welfare from the state. Feel free to move to any country other than ours if you'd like to have the government control you. Enlighten yourselves, read Ayn Rand's books or talk to those who have come here from communist countries to see what you're voting us into. Obama doesn't care about YOU, he cares about CONTROL. Open your eyes.

My wife is from Europe so I know what I am talking about. In her country people are turned away and not even given the chance to fight illnesses like Cancer, HIV, and other illnesses that hit us later in life. My father-in-law has lung cancer and its in the first stages he was told to go home and die. He went to five hospitals and was told the same thing. They told him he is too old. He is olny 63 years old. My children will not get to know their grand father cause its not cost effective.

I am a person on MinnCare and it is a great system the only thing is you have to fill out the paper work. People its not that hard or maybe you are just to lazy and love to be a leech. I feel that we can not try a major over haul ar this time it may sink oir nation. People Dem or Rep we need to think and not just jump on party sides please be smarter then that. Our Fore Fathers did not want this country to be like Europe why did we rush to break what they have done.

My fellow Americans why should I have to pay for Healthcare for the hole Nation. Alread I am taxed 30% of what I make. Now I will be taxed more cause I went and found a job that has Healthcare. If you want Gov. Healthcare move to Canada or Europe and you will find the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence. We have MinnCare and BagerCare why not help the systems that are in place. Let's not reinvent the wheel.
