The Botany Of Christmas Plants

By KBJR News 1

Tis' the season for Poinsettias and Wednesday night those with questions about the holiday favorite had a chance to learn some interesting pointers.

The Arrowhead Chapter of "Wild Ones" held a program at the Hartley Nature Center on the botany of Christmas plants.

Folks learned where Poinsettias grow and that there is in fact native holly in Northern Minnesota.

UMD Professor of Biology, John Pastor led the discussion and says the plants are more than just a holiday tradition.

"So this is one of those unusual things that people don't realize that these plants have an interesting ecology that they live independent of our Christmas traditions and so forth. It's just a lot of interesting things."

The professor says the poinsettia was named after the US ambassador to Mexico in 1820... That man's name, John Poinset.
