An evening of ice fishing turned frightening for an 18–year old Ely man.

Ryan Byrnes was in his portable fish house on Shagawa Lake Wednesday when he and a friend heard several gunshots nearby.

A bullet came through the roof and hit Byrnes in the head, but didn't penetrate his skull.

Authorities believe the shooting was accidental.

"It's important to make sure that they know what they're shooting at and that they know where the bullet's going to end up, so it doesn't end up in a situation that's going to hurt somebody or somebody else's property or worse, you know, kill somebody," said conservation officer Don Bozovsky.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Department says no one has come forward, but they're investigating several leads.
