Its been an expensive winter with serious cold and rising fuel costs.
Finding ways to cut your heating bill isn't easy.
But there is a solution as Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson explains in this weeks "Your Green Life".

While Natural Gas and Wood Pellet burners are an effective way to heat your home, they may not be the greenest. Photovoltaic panels are one of the greenest solutions, but can be expensive. So...how about solar blinds?

"They hang inside the house, they are not like every other solar heater that are outside the house and you have to fight 20 below to get the temperature in", said Keith McKinzie.

These solar blinds behind me are simple and easy to install but how efficient are they?

"The average temperature in the bottom of 60 degrees puts a temperature out of the top at 108 degrees", said Keith McKinzie.

The process used to heat the air to that temperature is extremely simple.

"How they work is they hang in a south facing window, the sun comes in the south facing window, heats up a black collector. Hot air naturally starts to rise, as the hot air rises its opened through the bottom to the top it pulls the cold air out of the bottom and put the hot air in to the top", said Keith McKinzie.

This rising air helps promote a natural circulation in your home which can definitely reduce your heating bill.

"The fuel bills were cut over 35 percent just last year and that's year over year", said Keith McKinzie.

Using the sun for your financial advantage!

"The sun is one of the most powerful tools we have and this is just one way to harness it", said Keith McKinzie.
