Despite all the talked about turbulence in the economy, experts say there's promising news to pass along from the housing sector.

With the help of tax credits, Northland realtors say home sales are picking up. But experts say home prices are fluctuating.

For those trying to sell their home, the road can be bumpy.

"We've had the house on the market since mid-July of last year," said Lisa Beatrez of Duluth.

"And we have had a lot of showings...a lot of interest, but as far as actual sale--nothing at this point," said Tony Beatrez.

But the Duluth Area Association of Realtors says the local housing market is starting to improve.

"It's just starting to pick up and we expect the next couple months to be fairly good," said Mike Peller, Duluth Area Association of Realtors president.

But, prices are fluctuating. From the end of last year into the 3rd quarter of 2010, experts say Duluth home prices are forecasted to decline three-tenths of a percent.

"As long as demand stays relatively good, home values will stay pretty good," said Peller.

In Superior, the median sale price in the city is down about $8,000 for the first two months of the year compared to 2009.

"I think we're going to see a little bit of stabilization moving forward," said Steve Germond of Weichert Realtors in Superior. "I do think we're going to see some increased market activity seasonally."

And for Lisa and Tony Beatrez, who are trying to sell their Duluth home, they hope the pace picks up.

"We're a little frustrated with it, but as far as anxiousness, we would like to sell," said Tony.

Even with varying prices, realtors say the market is showing consistency.

"Home values are staying steady right now--it appears that demand is fairly good this spring," said Peller.

If you're a first time home buyer, realtors say an $8,000 tax credit is currently available. For existing homeowners, Uncle Sam is offering a $6,500 incentive for those meeting certain qualifications.
