Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- A salute to the late Congressman Jim Oberstar this morning, as the laker bearing his name sounded a full, formal fleet whistle salute.

The Honorable James L Oberstar came into Duluth around 9:30 this morning, just as funeral services were getting underway for the Congressman at, Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, Maryland.

The Representative was a major player in the nation's transportation system and infrastructure, and a Chisholm native.

"For Interlake Steamship Company to just be able to sound that salute from a vessel that bares his family name I think is just really a lovely touch for all of us in recognition of all the support he gave the Maritime Industry through all these years," Duluth Seaway Port Authority, Adele Yorde, said.

Today all U.S. flag vessels on the Great Lakes will lower their flags to half–mast in honor of the politician.
