Duluth, MN (NNCNOW.com) --- Minnesota's largest union announed Monday that it is joining the campaign for marriage equality in the state.
AFSCME Council 5 announced its support for marriage equality and urged state legislators to extend the freedom to marry to same-sex couples throughout Minnesota.
Elliot Sedie, Executive Director of AFSCME Council explained the union's unanimous decision to back same-sex marriage :"Same sex couples pay taxes in Minnesota. They vote here, run businesses here and serve in our military. They work hard and contribute to our communities, and they have children who deserve to grow up in stable families with married parents."
AFSCME is the first union to join the campaign for marriage equality, saying that all loving same-sex couples should have the freedom to marry in the state they call home.
State legislators are just weeks away from a controversial vote that could make Minnesota the tenth state to legalize same-sex marriage.
