Ashland, WI (NNCNOW.com) --- The Ashland City Council approved the mayor's budget for 2014.

One of the items Mayor Bill Whalen wanted was a raise in the Mayor's salary, but it wasn't approved.

At this time the Mayor's position is part time and pays about $14,000.

Whalen had wanted $22,000 per year, pointing out the salary hasn't been increased in eight years.

The council did approve an increase in the mayor's economic development spending from $4,900 to $7,000.

"If we really want jobs here and lobbying, which I do, I need more money than just $4,900."

Whalen wanted the economic development budget raised to $12,000.

His term is up in April and he has until Dec. 27 to declare his candidacy for re-election.
